Healing isn’t Linear

If I could save people from believing one lie about healing, it would be this: that once you heal, you never struggle again. I believed that for a long time. I thought healing meant arriving at a destination where nothing hurt anymore, where certain memories no longer stung, where certain people no longer had the power to trigger me, and where peace became permanent. Then one day, something as ordinary as a song, a smell, or a conversation brought emotions rushing back that I thought I had already worked through. For a moment, I wondered if I had somehow undone years of progress.

I hadn’t. I was simply revisiting an old wound with new eyes.

That’s the part no one talks about. Healing isn’t a straight line that steadily climbs upward. It moves in seasons. Sometimes it feels like you’re making incredible progress, and other times it feels as though you’ve taken several steps backward. But what often feels like regression is actually something much different. It’s another layer revealing itself because you’ve become strong enough to face it.

I’ve often compared healing to restoring an old house. The first time you walk inside, you notice the obvious things that need attention. The clutter. The broken furniture. The peeling paint. As you begin clearing those away, you start seeing things you couldn’t see before—the dust hidden beneath the furniture, the cracks behind the pictures, the repairs that have been waiting quietly for years. The house didn’t suddenly become more damaged. Your vision simply became clearer. Healing works the same way.

As we grow emotionally and spiritually, we begin recognizing patterns we were never able to see before. We start noticing how childhood experiences shaped our relationships, how fear disguised itself as loyalty, or how survival became so familiar that peace actually felt uncomfortable. Those discoveries aren’t evidence that healing isn’t working. They’re evidence that it is.

I’ve cried over things I thought I had already forgiven. I’ve been surprised by emotions I was convinced were behind me. The difference today is that I no longer panic when they surface. Years ago, I would have believed those emotions meant I was right back where I started. Today I understand they’re simply inviting me to heal another layer.

Progress isn’t measured by whether you’re ever triggered again. It’s measured by what happens after the trigger. Do you remain there, believing the same lies you once believed? Or do you recognize what’s happening, extend yourself grace, and slowly find your way back to peace? That’s what growth looks like. Healing isn’t becoming someone who never hurts. It’s becoming someone who knows that hurt no longer gets the final word.

So if today feels harder than yesterday, don’t automatically assume you’re moving backward. You may simply be standing in front of another door that God is gently inviting you to open. And while it may feel uncomfortable, it also means you’re still moving forward. Sometimes the deepest healing happens in places you thought had already been restored.

Reflection

Healing isn’t measured by how often you fall. It’s measured by how differently you rise.
